The Chinese Exclusion Act.
J. Warren Keifer and the 47th Congress of the United States of America drew up the Chinese Exclusion Act and it was signed on May 6, 1882 by Chester Arthur. This was an Act that was to ban Chinese people from entering the country for the next ten years. Congress and President Arthur wanted to rid America of future Chinese immigrants. "during such suspension it shall not be lawful for any Chinese laborer to come, or, having so come after the expiration of said ninety days, to remain within the United States." This law applied to everyone in America. This a crucial law in American history because it changed Chinese immigration for the next 60 years not allowing Chinese people to enter. The law came along with discrimination and hatred towards the Chinese. This law is looked at as one of the most unconstitutional acts ever passed.
